3 way USB/Ethernet Roundup
-- Tuesday, February 5, 2002 -- Page 6
Internet, what about Inner-net? The last area we need to cover is the networking capabilities, or 'round the office business as I like to call it. I took a 40 mb upgrade file to the popular game Operation Flashpoint, and sent it whirling through the home network. I copied the file over and over from an 800 mhz athlon with 256 memoy to a 1.2 ghz athlon with 256 DDR memory. As you can see here, the usb adaptors pail in comparison to the good ol' NIC hands down. Only taking 9.3 seconds to transfer a 40 mb file as compared to 60 seconds. This is the limitations of the usb adaptors. For playing network games and transferring massive files amongst a network of servers, the Umax is highly more useful. The data can only come into the USB interface port at only a certain rate, where as the PCI NIC is right on the motherboard.
